Burger Review: The Big Carl

Thursday, August 20, 2009

A lot of hoopla has been made in the past few days about the latest addition to the Carl's Jr.'s menu - The Big Carl.

This new burger comes as a response to some food fighting that has been going on recently between Carl's Jr. and McDonald's. It involves some copy-catting and smack talkin just like a good Jr. High fight - you can read more about it here.

Carl's Jr. claims that this new burger is just like the Big Mac - except bigger and cheaper. Those two attributes are perfect to make some winning nom noms.

Well is it?

Here's a shot of the new Big Carl, fresh outta the wrapper. Each burger comes with "two charbroiled beef patties, Carl's classic sauce, two slices of American cheese and lettuce all on a toasted sesame seed bun." That setup cost me $2.49.

The first impression I got was that it's a pretty fatty burger. According to the Carl's website, a big Carl should weigh in at 315 grams. A Big Mac is 214 grams. Yeah I busted out my calculator and did the math for you: that's an easy 45% upgrade as far as serving size is concerned.

First Bite: Lots of big meaty flavor. This is a straight-up old school cheeseburger, and the flavor of the charbroiled beef patties and American cheese hit you big time.

As you can see below, the Big Carl doesn't skimp on the meat. Lots and lots of charbroiled beef and cheese, with some leaf lettuce, sauce and a sesame bun to bring it together. If you've never had a burger at Carl's Jr., one of the flavors that stands out is the charbroiled taste. They pride themselves on this aspect of their burgers, and rightly so.

Well what about the sauce? When you eat a Big Mac, the taste of that sauce is really noticeable, not so much with the Big Carl. This is probably because the Mac has that middle third bun to soak up more sauce.

I got my burger in a "Promo Burger" wrapper. Hopefully Carl's Jr. decides makes this a permanent addition to the menu cause I think they hit a home run with a pretty big burger on the cheap.

Nutritions facts:
  • Calories: 920
  • Fat: 59 grams
  • Carbs: 51 grams
  • Protein: 46 grams
Pros:
  • Lots of meat, lots of cheese.
  • Size, it's much bigger than a Big Mac (cheaper too!)
  • Good value.
  • Charbroiled flavor stands out.
Cons:
  • If you like your special burger sauce, this taste isn't too noticeable.
  • No extra greens other than lettuce...some eaters fancy some tomatoes, onions, pickles, etc.
  • Damn near 1000 calories, but it's a fast food double cheeseburger...duh. You can eat a salad the day after.
Would I order this again? No doubt, it was really good. I love simple, classic cheeseburgers and a good value and Carl's Jr. has a hit, especially for only $2.49.
